WOMEN OF THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

To further the goal of student support for scholarship, the Women of the University Community (WUC) Organization annually presents the following four awards:

The Ruth Tolley Scholarship

Ruth Tolley Picture Ruth Tolley was a student in the first class in what was then called the College of Home Economics at Syracuse University. She later married past Chancellor William Tolley. During his tenure she maintained an active interest in women’s programs and activities of women’s groups.

The Ruth Tolley Scholarship is awarded to an academically strong female student in the College of Health Services and Human Professions (HSHP). Currently HSHP includes departments or courses similar to those taught formerly in Home Economics or Human Development.

 

 

The Mildred Eggers Scholarships

Mildred Eggers photo Mildred Eggers was the wife of former Chancellor Melvin Eggers. She assumed an active role in the functions of the S.U. Women’s Club (now known as WUC) and is remembered as providing leadership, friendship and gracious hospitality. She was a reading teacher for many years and had a special dedication to children and adults whose educational needs were greater than conventional programs. She had a special interest in students in the College of Continuing Education.

Two awards are given to honor Mildred Eggers. The scholarships are given to female students attending Syracuse University’s College of Continuing Education who have demonstrated high academic achievement and financial need.

 

 

The Beverly Whaley Scholarship

The Whaley Scholarship honors Beverly Whaley. A former teacher who came to Syracuse when her husband Ross Whaley was appointed President of the College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry. During his time in office she contributed to the many activities of the Women’s organization. She continues to participate in many of its functions.

The award is given to a female Junior Student in the College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry who exhibits academic merit and financial need.



 

The awards are presented at the organization’s Annual Spring Luncheon Meeting.
Information regarding application forms will be available early in the spring semester at each school.
